Senior dogs (typically 7+ years for most breeds, 5+ for giant breeds) tend to slow down, lose muscle mass, and burn fewer calories. For the calculator, choose "Low" activity to reflect a typical senior's lifestyle.
The 10% treat rule still applies, but with a lower calorie budget, that means fewer total treat calories. Many senior dogs do best with 30–80 kcal of treats per day, depending on size.
If your senior dog has gained weight, set the goal to "Lose". Excess weight puts strain on aging joints and worsens arthritis. Talk to your vet about ideal weight if you're unsure.
