Dog Treat Calculator

Our dog treat calculator shows how many treats your dog can safely eat per day. Enter your dog's weight (lbs or kg), activity level, and weight goal, and we'll calculate a vet-aligned daily treat calorie budget using the 10% rule.

Treats — including chews, training rewards, and table scraps — should never exceed 10% of your dog's daily calories. The other 90% should come from a complete and balanced diet. This helps prevent overfeeding, weight gain, and long-term health issues.

How Many Treats Per Day for Dogs

The right number of treats per day for a dog depends on size and activity. A small 10 lb dog needs ~275 kcal/day — only about 27 kcal of treats. A 50 lb medium dog needs ~1,100 kcal/day, leaving room for around 110 kcal of treats. Use the calculator above for an exact number based on your dog.

Dog Calorie Needs

Daily calorie needs are calculated from RER = 70 × (kg)^0.75, multiplied by an activity factor (1.2 low, 1.6 normal, 2.0 active) and adjusted for weight goal. See our dedicated dog calorie calculator for a full breakdown.

Safe Treat Guidelines

  • Keep treats under 10% of total daily calories.
  • Choose low-calorie training treats (1–5 kcal each) for frequent rewards.
  • Count chews, table scraps, and dental treats toward the daily total.
  • Adjust meal portions slightly down on heavy treat days.

How the Calculator Works

  1. You enter your pet's weight in either lbs or kg — for example, a 25 lb dog (≈ 11.3 kg) or a 10 lb cat (≈ 4.5 kg). If you enter lbs, we convert to kilograms using kg = lbs ÷ 2.20462.
  2. We calculate Resting Energy Requirement (RER) using the standard veterinary formula: 70 × (kg)0.75. Example: a 25 lb (11.3 kg) dog → 70 × 11.30.75432 kcal.
  3. We multiply RER by an activity factor (1.2–2.0 for dogs, 1.0–1.4 for cats) and adjust for weight goal (×0.8 to lose, ×1.2 to gain).
  4. 10% of that total gives you a safe daily treat calorie limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treats can I give my dog per day?

Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily calorie intake. The exact number depends on weight, activity level, and the calories per treat. Use the calculator above for a personalized daily limit.

How many treats can I give my cat per day?

The 10% rule applies to cats too. Most adult cats need 200–300 kcal per day, so only 20–30 kcal should come from treats — typically just a few small pieces.

What is the 10% rule for pet treats?

Veterinarians recommend that treats make up no more than 10% of a pet's daily calories so the rest of the diet stays nutritionally balanced.

How are daily calories for dogs and cats calculated?

You can enter your pet's weight in either lbs or kg. We convert lbs to kilograms (kg = lbs ÷ 2.20462), then calculate Resting Energy Requirement as 70 × (kg)0.75. Example: a 25 lb (≈ 11.3 kg) dog → about 432 kcal RER. We then multiply by an activity factor and adjust for your pet's weight goal.
